Jun-Prof. Dr. Klaus Herburgers 'team is intrigued by algae and plants, particularly their ability to produce large amounts of diverse polysaccharides. Building on insights into polysaccharide metabolism and chemistry, they aim to advance sustainable biomass production and the development of novel biomaterials.

Within the Alg4Nut project, Jun-Prof. Dr. Herburger and his team tackles Work Package 1 , which focuses on establishing a seaweed farm in the Southern Baltic Sea of Germany. The objectives are:

  • Establishment of Baltic Sea algae hatcheries from regional clonal algal strains with high growth potential
  • Analysis of algal biomass composition and preparation of extracts for project partners
  • Establishment and monitoring of an algal farm in a large on-shore canal system
