Prof. Dr. Urich group are experts in the field rumen microbiology and has extensive expertise in metatranscriptomics and amplicon-based analyses. His research focuses on the investigation of the rumen microbiome and specifically the methanogenic archaea, complemented by the cultivation of strictly anaerobic methanogens.

Within the Alg4Nut project, Prof. Dr. Urich and his team are leading Work Package 5 which focuses on the identification of methanogens and the influence of algal extracts on their activity in the rumen. The objectives of this team are:

  • Identification of key microbes in methane production in the rumen and characterization of their gene expression
  • Enrichment of representative methanogens and following physiological characterization
  • Analysis of the effects of algae extracts on methanogen cultures
