Work Package 2: Feeding Baltic Sea Algae to Dairy Cows for Improved Animal Health

Principle Investigators and team
In Work Package 2, the potential of Baltic Sea algae as a feed supplement for dairy cows will be evaluated. The project investigates how algae feeding can support nutrient cycles and whether it is suitable for improving the health of dairy cows during the critical period around calving. Comprehensive data will be collected on feed intake, body weight, milk yield and quality, metabolism and health, and emissions. Additionally, rumen pH, temperature, and rumination behavior will be continuously monitored.
To evaluate the metabolic and immune-supporting effects of algae, blood samples will be analyzed for gases, blood cell profiles, metabolites, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, acute phase proteins, and antioxidant defense capacity.
